The Sakman Chamorro Project is recreating "the Sakman Chamorro, a 47-foot single outrigger sailing canoe based on the 1742 drawings by Sir George Anson."

The canoe sailed for the first time on August 26, 2011, in San Diego Bay. Ultimately, the team plans to sail it to the Mariana Islands. [Link]

College professor Richard Beck of Abilene Christian University and some of his students have solved the riddle of the mysterious Anson Light. I've listed the Light previously, but Professor's Beck's investigation is really the final word on the Anson Light.

In summary, the Anson Light is a mysterious light seen floating around a cemetery in Anson, Texas. Investigators have speculated that the Light is nothing more than car headlights on a nearby highway seen through trees but no one has actually done the testing to prove it.

Until Professor Beck and his students headed out to New Hope Cemetery the night of June 23, 2001, armed with iPhones. They were able to definitively prove that the Light is indeed car headlights on US-277. One more ghost busted. [Link]

WONG, Anson (b. June 16, 1958) -- Given name Wong Keng Liang, Anson Wong is an infamous wildlife trafficker. In 2001 he was sentenced to 71 months in federal prison and fined. He was also banned from selling animals in the United States for three years after his release from prison.

According to this expose in National Geographic, he ignored the ban and continued selling even while serving time. He was released after serving two and a half years in 2003.

In August of 2010 Anson was arrested in Malaysia for smuggling snakes in his luggage.

Anson Unit / Anson House Block

The Anson Unit offers a 48-bed residential unit and is located within Anson House Block, on the grounds of HMYOI Wetherby. All rooms are single occupancy and the unit is dedicated solely to young people serving long-term sentences.

The overall aim of the Anson Unit is to improve the life chances of the young people both in custody and on release, with an emphasis on working towards reducing reoffending and achieving parole. The unit is run on a therapeutic basis with the ethos of young people’s inclusivity and participation in the day to day decision-making and problem solving.

The Anson Unit has a dedicated staff group who are trained and experienced in working with young people with long sentences. All young people will have a dedicated caseworker working closely with them. Their personal officer will work closely with both external and seconded youth offending teams and families.

All placements onto the unit go through a referral and assessment process. However, the unit is available to all young men serving long-term and/or indeterminate sentences who have at least nine months left to serve or until his 18th birthday. Abraham Anson

Lt. Col. Abraham Anson (94), ASPRS Potomac Region Emeritus Historian, passed away May 29, 2005, of a massive heart attack. A longtime member of ASPRS, Anson received the ASPRS Fellow award in 1997 for his unselfish contribution to the science and the Society as Associate Editor for both the Manual of Color Aerial Photography and the first edition of the Manual of Remote Sensing, and editor of the Proceedings of the Aerial Photography Workshop for the Plant Sciences, as well as many other key literary contributions. Similarly, he has many noteworthy earlier contributions which include examining the impact of supersonic air platforms in aerial photo acquisition, the development of the auto mosaicer, the design of the multiband camera for the Apollo Moon Lander, and others. As previously noted, residents of Madison, Maine, had yet to determine what to do with the fire damaged remains of the Anson Stick Mill. This may be changing:

Residents and business owners downtown support the development of a facility to provide lower heating costs.

That's according to a survey conducted within the downtown area in the past few weeks and discussed at the selectmen's meeting Monday night.

Town officials are looking into whether to transform the former Anson Stick Mill into an energy-producing facility to heat downtown buildings.

The town acquired the large brick structure from David Smith, the last owner of the former mill, which burned in July 2007. Downeast Woodcrafters was the last business at the site.

To transform the damaged facility, however, would require "substantial renovations," said Jonathan Edgerton, senior vice president of the engineering firm Wright-Pierce.

The "bulk of the facility will really probably have to come down," he said.

Depending on the energy-producing mechanism, the capital costs of starting up the facility could run between $1 and $2 million, he said.

The Avro Anson was used by Greece during WWII. The Hellenic Air Force has an entry about the Anson:

12 twin-engine, advanced training, Avro Anson Mk I were ordered in 1939. The were used by the 13th Naval Cooperation Squadron during the war in 1940 - 1941 in patrol and convoy escort missions that the squadron usually undertook.

Owing to their naval cooperation missions, army and materials sea transports became possible, during the first period of the Greek-Italian War. They formed the core of the Greek Air Force in the Middle East, as 5 Anson escaped to Egypt after the front collapsed. The Avro Anson Mk I continued to serve under British command, maintaining the identity of the 13th Naval Cooperation Squadron, until they were replaced by the Blenheim Mk IV.

A Bend man is in jail in Lane County, suspected of trying to rob a Southern Oregon Federal Credit Union in Medford on Monday.

Richard Lane Anson, 39, was arrested on a warrant charging him with a second-degree robbery Tuesday.

Medford detectives identified Anson as the suspect who went into the credit union at 1380 Biddle Road at about 2:40 p.m. Monday and presented a note claiming he had a gun and wanted money, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said. The would-be robber got nervous and fled before getting any cash, however, police said.

A temporary arrest warrant was issued on Anson. Continued work by detectives determined that Anson was in the Eugene area, Hansen said. Medford police alerted police there to be on the look-out for Anson and the car registered to him.

A Springfield police officer spotted the vehicle pulling into the parking lot of a Springfield bar Tuesday evening and saw Anson go inside, Hansen said.

Police surrounded the building and were planning to move in to arrest Anson when he ran out a back door of the bar. Officers quickly moved in to arrest him there.

He was lodged in the Lane County Jail, where he remains this morning. Medford detectives drove to Springfield and interviewed him. He will be brought back to Jackson County to face the charges here.

Christopher Lee Anson

Anson, Christopher Lee -- Confessed bank robber:

A 24-year-old Inver Grove Heights man pleaded guilty April 12 to one count of armed bank robbery for the July 7, 2009 heist of the White Rock Bank in Cannon Falls.

Christopher Lee Anson was pulled over for a speeding ticket shortly after the noontime robbery, providing his home address to an officer that then responded to the robbery scene. It took little time for the officer to recognize the suspect as the man he pulled over.

Anson was arrested at his apartment in Inver Grove Heights shortly after.

In his plea agreement, Anson admitted taking $2,687 from the bank as well as jeopardizing the life of another during the commission of the crime.

According to the police report, Anson ordered a teller to place money in a white, plastic, grocery bag. When the teller failed to comply immediately, the robber brandished a knife and repeated his request. He also said, "Don't tell anyone, or you will be hurt." The teller handed over the money, and Anson left.

Police were able to recover the stolen money, the knife and clothing that matched what the robber had been wearing after Anson's arrest.

Anson faces a potential maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.

Anson V. Gogh has many stories to tell. Mostly ghost stories.

The author of “Wayward Spirits & Earthbound Souls: True Tales of Ghostly Crossings” has had ghostly encounters since she was a child.

“It’s something I’ve always kind of had,” Gogh said.

Gogh remembers as a child being aware of other presences that were not corporeal. To some extent she didn’t think anything of it because she didn’t realize it was unusual, she said.

As she got older, she also became more aware of her role and abilities.

“At first I was contacting my spirit guide without knowing who it was,” she said.

Through a meditative state she learned how to interact with what she was sensing and seeing. She began helping souls who hadn’t “crossed over” — which she calls waywards — to move on.

It wasn’t until 2008, when she was invited by a writer’s Web site to enter a fiction contest with a Halloween theme, that she decided to put her stories down on paper.

“Then it kind of blossomed from there,” Gogh said.

Gravitas

Canadian artist Keith Harder used pieces of twelve Avro Anson aircraft to create his "Gravitas" installation near Calgary, Alberta. I'm not sure what it means, but there it is. More on it can be read in the Canwest News Service report:

"They're like ghosts of the past haunting the present," says Harder, also a University of Alberta fine arts professor. "They say a lot about death and dying, about gravity."

Thousands of Anson twin-engined airplanes were built in Montreal and used to train British and Canadian pilots at bases across Canada. When the war was over, and the glue started to deteriorate in their wooden wings, the wartime scrap was sold to farmers for parts.

The installation, called Gravitas, measures about 100 metres across, large enough to be seen from a commercial airliner approaching Calgary from the south.

"I'm waiting for the next Google satellite to go across," said Harder, who hasn't yet arranged pedestrian access from the secondary highway nearby.

Bob Evans has been rescuing the "carcasses" for 20 year as landowners take the last parts they want and seek to clean out their junkyards.

He's a curator at The Nanton Lancaster Society Air Museum, where volunteers are trying to rebuild a complete Anson from his 20-odd specimens, scrounging parts from each wreak in turn. The wings alone will take three or four years to complete, he says. "They've been doing the cabin floor now for two and a half. "

Anson Building, La Grande, OR

The historic Anson Building located at 1216 Adams Street in downtown LaGrande, Oregon. This building is located within the LaGrande Commercial Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places. The plaque on the building reads:

Henry Anson, an early settler in LaGrande, constructed this building in 1892 initially as a general store. In the early 1900's the building housed a clothing store, including a cleaning and pressing operation. The New York Store occupied the building for many years beginning in 1924. Later the Harding Family Shoe Store was located here.

The Anson Panther

Allegedly the last panther shot in Berks County, Pennsylvania, the Anson Panther is in storage in the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. According to readingeagle.com:

Back in 1874, several lumbermen were working in Albany Township near the famed rocky outcropping, the Pinnacle.

Over several nights, the workers heard an animal prowling about their camp. Returning one night, a worker noticed he was being stalked by a large cat. A co-worker, Thomas Anson, retrieved a gun and tracked the animal to a nearby spring, where he put several bullets into the panther's body, according to Henry Shoemaker, who wrote the book "Extinct Pennsylvania Animals."

Since then, the spring in Albany has been known as Panther Springs.

Anson has the distinction of being the last man to kill a panther in Pennsylvania.

Anson's panther was mounted, and then bounced around to a number of homes in southern Pennsylvania. In 2004, it was donated to the State Museum of Pennsylvania, where it remains in storage.

Despite her rough appearance, the Anson Panther is a valuable piece of Pennsylvania history, said Dr. Walter Meshaka Jr. senior curator for zoologic and botany at the museum.

Anson M. Mills, 86, of Cullman died Tuesday.
He was a retired truck driver with R.E. Garrison Trucking.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Mills; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Emily Anson of Cantonment, Fla., and Douglas Marion and Kathi Mills of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Mills and Robert Reid of Florence; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one stepson, Jerry Wayne Merritt and wife Joyce of Wetumpka; and stepdaughter, Linda and husband Lamar Pesto of Millbrook.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Moss-Service Funeral Home with Dr. Edwin Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Cullman City Cemetery.

Karen Anson is the author of Moving Heaven and Earth: The Life of Melvin Moran. An article in the Ada Evening News describes the book:

"Moving Heaven and Earth" was written by Karen Anson of Seminole and published by the Oklahoma Heritage Association.

The book chronicles the life of Seminole philanthropist Melvin Moran – a recognized state and national leader in business, politics, and American-Israeli affairs. Moran is also co-founder of the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum, a hands-on educational and entertainment tourist attraction that has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of children worldwide.

Born in St. Joseph, Mo., to European Jews, the book jacket states, “He lived through more than one Depression and rose to the top through the economic highs and lows of the last 80 years, filling his life with humor and fun along the way.”

Moran served in a top secret unit of the U.S. Air Force in London during the Korean War, where he met his future wife Jasmine Lindsay, a West End actress. Although most of his life has been spent as a businessman and community supporter in Seminole, his travels and friendships have taken him around the world.

Gov. Brad Henry wrote the foreword to the book. In introducing Moran, he writes, “...here is a man whose biography is that of the quintessential American success story. In the worlds of business and civic involvement, Melvin Moran has accomplished things about which most of us can only dream. And yet Melvin remains what he has always been – hard-working, caring, and compassionate. A nice guy. A real mensch.”

Author Anson is a 1969 graduate of New Lima High School and Seminole State College. She also attended the University of Oklahoma. Anson spent 20 years as an editor at The Seminole Producer. She has been published in Oklahoma Today and by the Associated Press.

Her next project is a history of the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum.

The beginning

When was Anson County formed? 1748? 1749? Or 1750? Take your choice and you will be partially correct.

In 1748, two delegations appeared before the Royal Governor Gabriel Johnston. One group petitioned for the establishment of a new county; the other opposed such formation. After consideration, the Governor read into the records — “by virtue of the power vested in me, I do create...a county, by the name of Anson County, by itself, separate and independent.” The Assembly still had to approve. Also in September 1748, the Governor and council named Justices of The Peace and the Sheriff.

In 1749, the bill in the Assembly creating the county did not complete passage although many thought it done. This date was used when Anson County observed its Bicentennial in October 1949.

The bill finally was passed and gained assent by the Royal Governor on April 9, 1750, the legal date of establishment.

Why form a new County?

Settlers continued to move west. Remember in the early 1700s this area was the western frontier. As a result some had to travel more than 100 miles to the courthouse in Bladen. The trip took several days to go and return. This made business and government almost impossible. The Governor realized this. Distance and poor roads were the primary reasons for allowing the formation of a new county.

How large was this new County of Anson?

Anson County was huge, much too large even from the start. Its boundary to the east was not the Pee Dee River as it is now. In fact, the eastern boundary was Drowning Creek and the Lumbee (Lumber) River now located in Robeson County. Bordered on the north by Virginia and Granville’s claim, and on the south by South Carolina, Anson extended west to the Mississippi River or wherever the charter of Carolina indicated, possibly to the Pacific. What later became the state of Tennessee was included.

For how long was Anson County this size?

Not long. Rowan County to the north was established in 1753, and Mecklenburg to the west was formed in 1762. The territory that became Tennessee was ceded back to the United States Government in 1790 and became a state in 1796.

Who was Anson County named for?

Anson was named for Admiral George Anson, First Lord of the Admiralty, highest ranking officer of the British Navy. Anson was the third Englishman to sail around the world.

Who settled Anson?

A great number of the settlers were Scots-Irish and Germans. Some French families settled the area. Scots, Welsh and Englishmen also settled here.

When formed, most of the population was located between Drowning Creek and the Pee Dee River. However, the population west of the Pee Dee continued to grow from the 1750s. They moved farther west as the years passed.

Most settlers came up the Cape Fear from Wilmington, up the Pee Dee from Georgetown and Charlestown. Others followed Indian and animal trails and other settlers from Pennsylvania through Virginia to Carolina lands.

Anson the Ant is one half of the comic strip duo Elo & Anson. Elo is an elephant. The pair's ongoing adventures are featured here. Their creator, Al Gundy, summarizes their story:

Elo the Elephant and Anson the Ant are roommates, in Serengeti City. Anson works at a large corporation called AfriCo. His boss, AfriCo’s CEO, is a snake named Mr. Snyder.

In the First Web Series (”E&A Classic” and “E&A in Technicolor”), Elo and Anson started a band with their friend Todd. The band was called “Frosted Frumpet” and featured Todd on bass, Anson on guitar, and Elo on drums. (Today, we don’t hear any mention of Todd or “Frumpet.” They probably broke up.)

Anson urged Elo to supplement his meager musician’s income with a desk job at AfriCo. Elo quickly and accidentally became a high-powered salesman, but was let go after his clients were stolen by an evil elephant named Phantis, who, with his scarob beetle accomplice Scaphio, re-wired the AfriCo phone lines and received all of Elo’s calls. Elo later landed his dream job at one of his favorite haunts, a Chinese Restaurant, where he works as a chef to this day. The restaurant is run by Pang the Panda.

Elo and Anson also befriended Elo’s barber, a South African Cattle Egret named Bernie, who considers himself not only a brilliant coiffeur, but also the greatest juice connoisseur, or “juicie”, the world has ever known. When Elo accidentally discovered “Hapgood’s Juice Bar”, which Bernie co-owns, Bernie took Elo under his wing as an apprentice juicie. The bar is proprieted by Bernie’s best friend, H. Thomas Hapgood, or “Haps”, a happening hippo with a heart of gold. The origin of Bernie and Hapgood’s partnership, told during “E&A in Technicolor”, is re-imagined in “Bury My Beak at Hapgood’s Juice Bar”, but the idea is the same: Hapgood was a hard-up customer of Bernie’s when the epicurean egret discovered the poor schlum’s talent and educated him on the Way of Juice. Elo, Anson and Bernie still frequent Hapgood’s Juice Bar, and Haps has only gotten more happening.

Anson Gonzalez is internationally recognised as a poet with several collections and with poems in most of the new major anthologies of Caribbean poetry. His career as a poet began in 1967 with the publication of Quinquennial which appeared in Writing: Anniversary 5. Since then his poems have been published in numerous journals, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and anthologies. In the early '70s he began to promote poetry and work toward sustaining the literary culture of the Caribbean and Trinidad and Tobago in particular. In 1973 he founded, edited, and published The New Voices, a bi-annual literary journal which has published poems, plays, short stories, and non-fiction by more than 300 Caribbean writers. The New Voices was published continuously for 20 years and is now available upon request via electronic mail. One of the major accomplishments of The New Voices was the Bibliography of Creative Writing in Trinidad and Tobago (1962-present). The bibliography documented books published by Trinidad and Tobago nationals in all aspects of creative writing. Although no longer available in print, the bibliography is still being updated and is available online. In 1974 Anson Gonzalez established a publishing imprint called New Voices which published his own poetry collections and many other books by Caribbean writers. The New Voices Newsletter was founded in 1981 and served the Caribbean writing community for 12 years by providing information about writers, literary competitions, grants, and workshops.

One of the founders and former presidents of the Writers' Union of Trinidad and Tobago, Anson Gonzalez established the celebration of Poetry Day (October 15) in Trinidad and Tobago in 1979. The occasion is now observed annually in eight other Caribbean countries and has given poetry and poets a prominent place in the cultural calendar. The first Anson Phelps Stokes (1838-1913), born in New York City, was a merchant, banker, publicist, and multimillionaire. He was the son of John Boulter and Caroline (Phelps) Stokes. He was brother of William Earl Dodge Stokes and Olivia Egleston Phelps Stokes. His grandfather was the London merchant Thomas Stokes, one of the thirteen founders of the London Missionary Society and later an active supporter of the American Bible Society, the American Tract Society and the American peace Society.

Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott) are two salesmen in the greater Los Angeles area for an energy drink, Minotaur. They promote it as a way to keep kids off drugs, although ironically Wheeler smokes marijuana while on break from work. Wheeler loves the job and even dresses in a Minotaur costume. Danny on the other hand, hates the job and possesses a constant negative attitude toward life, which results in the collapse of his relationship with his girlfriend, attorney Beth (Elizabeth Banks). One day after making one of their presentations at a high school, the duo find that their company truck is being towed. They protest by trying to drive it away from the tow-truck, but they end up driving it up a statue in front of the school.

They are arrested for destruction of school property, parking in a no parking zone, and assault of a police officer. Upon their arrest, the judge sentences the two to a 30 day jail sentence. Beth, however, manages to strike a deal with the judge giving Danny and Wheeler a deal in which they have to log 150 hours of community service over the next thirty days. The sentence is to be served at the judge's favorite charity, a big-brother style program called Sturdy Wings, led by Gayle Sweeny (Jane Lynch), a recovering cocaine-addict herself. Gayle is aware that their presence at Sturdy Wings is court-ordered and warns them that if they fail to carry out their tasks to her satisfaction, she will have them sent back to prison, which would cost them their jobs and their careers. Wheeler is paired up with Ronnie Shields (Bobb'e J. Thompson), a foulmouthed, streetwise miscreant obsessed with breasts who has driven away all the other "Bigs" he has been paired with, while Danny is paired up with Augie Farks (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), a nerdy teenager obsessed with live action role-playing games.

Anson Correctional Center

Anson Correctional Center, near Polkton [in Anson County, NC], was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house inmates who worked building roads.

The prison's original dormitory remains in use. A modular dormitory was added in 1978.

The General Assembly provided another 200 bed dormitory at Anson as part of the $55 million prison construction program authorized in 1989. The new dormitory, dining hall and multipurpose building opened in 1992.

Inmates work in a number of jobs. They may be assigned to Department of Transportation road crews or to maintenance or kitchen duties at the prison. Inmates nearing parole may participate in work release, leaving the prison for the part of the day to work for a business in the community.

Anson Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes in carpentry, cooking and brick masonry. Classes for adult education and for GED tests preparation are also available. Inmates may participate in life skills classes, religious or substance abuse treatment programs.

His father was Major General Sir William Anson, K.C.B.(1st Baronet Anson) and his mother was from the Dickenson family. He was taught Latin grammar by his father before he went to school. Anson's Bay is a small resort town in north east Tasmania.
Anson's Bay is the name of both a geographical feature and a small township on the extreme north eastern coast of Tasmania.

For much of the 20th century it was mostly engaged in the timber industry but is now mostly involved in fishing and tourism.

Anson's Bay is within easy reach of St. Helens per a motor road. In the past it was nautically known as 'The Bay o' Fires'. The Anson Bell was built by Palmer Johnson in 2002. The $15 million, 156 foot (some reports say 168 foot) long yacht was built to withstand flooding in two watertight compartments. It was named after the ill fated HMS Anson, probably the Admiral class battleship involved in a fatal collision. Reportedly, she carries the bell from the HMS Anson.

Dr. James Clitherall seeks relief from three long overdue accounts. In 1782, the state sold Clitherall's slaves for specie at "very inferior" prices. The specie was paid to the state before the delivery of the slaves. The account was audited, delivered to the Board of Commissioners on Accounts, sent to the auditor, and reported to the treasury. Yet, the "same hath in no wise been satisfied, nor hath your Memorialist been allowed to discount it, as so much of the Specie part of his Amercicement." The second overdue account, arising from the sale of slaves by the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates in 1783, brought Clitherall bonds payable in specie on a credit of three and six months. The bonds remain in the treasury unpaid. Moreover, the bond signed by John Cox and another man, Clitherall states, is "totally bad." Despite these just claims, Clitherall is "obliged to pay part of his amercement in Specie, and the remainder in general and Special Indents to the Attorney General, without being allowed any discount whatever." The third account derives from articles confiscated at Clitherall's plantation in 1782 by the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates. Clitherall asks for payment in specie, including interest, for the first account; a general indent, with interest, for the second account; and "other relief" for the third account.

Apparently Dr. Clitherall did not receive the relief he sought, since he filed another petition the next year. The slave Anson listed there is probably the same individual:

Dr. James Clitherall seeks relief from three long overdue accounts. In 1782, the state sold Clitherall's slaves for specie at "very inferior" prices. The specie was paid to the state before the delivery of the slaves. The account was audited, delivered to the Board of Commissioners on Accounts, sent to the auditor, and reported to the treasury. Yet, the "same hath in no wise been satisfied, nor hath your Memorialist been allowed to discount it, as so much of the Specie part of his Amercicement." The second overdue account, arising from the sale of slaves by the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates in 1783, brought Clitherall bonds payable in specie on a credit of three and six months. The bonds remain in the treasury unpaid. Moreover, the bond signed by John Cox and another man, Clitherall states, is "totally bad." Despite these just claims, Clitherall is "obliged to pay part of his amercement in Specie, and the remainder in general and Special Indents to the Attorney General, without being allowed any discount whatever." The third account derives from articles confiscated at Clitherall's plantation in 1782 by the Commissioners of Forfeited Estates. No record on whether or not the highly repetitive Dr. Clitheral ever succeeded in his suit.

Anson -

Anson and Michael, children of color, represent that their mother Matilda obtained her freedom more than thirteen years ago, "so adjudged by the courts of Missouri under the territorial government." They further recount that, after she was declared free, she moved to Illinois, where her children were born and where they lived "free and at liberty until this day," when they were "forcibly taken" from Illinois to St. Louis by Elijah Mitchell [Mitchel] and others. Contending that they are "now claimed as slaves," the petitioners fear they will be removed "by force beyond the jurisdiction of this court and state." Anson and Michael therefore "pray that they may be authorised to sue to establish their right to freedom" and that a writ of habeas corpus may issue "to prevent them being conveyed from the said jurisdiction."

Anson's petition was granted and he was freed along with his brother in 1832.

ANSON, General Sir George - (b. 1769 - d. 1849) Anson was the second son of George Anson (previously Adams) and his wife the honorable Mary Vernon, daughter of the first Lord Vernon. Admiral George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, was his great-uncle and Thomas William Anson, 1st Viscount Anson, his elder brother (see Earl of Lichfield for more information on the Anson family). General Sir William Anson, 1st Baronet was his younger brother. He was also uncle to Thomas Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield, George Anson (who later became the Commander-in-Chief, India and to George Edward Anson, Keeper of the Privy Purse, who died a few days before him in 1849.

He entered the British Army in 1786 and served under the Duke of York and Sir Ralph Abercromby in Holland. It was to be in the Peninsular War where his reputation grew markedly. He served in all the campaigns between 1809 and 1813 and gained distinction in his command of the 16th Light Dragoons at the Battle of Oporto. His reputation was further enhanced by his command of a brigade of light cavalry at the Battles of Talavera, Busaco, Salamanca and Vittoria. For his services in the Battles of Talavera, Salamanca and Vittoria he received a medal and two clasps. So prominent was he during these campaigns that the House of Commons thanked him in November 1816 for his services generally during the Peninsular Wars. In February 1827 he was appointed to the colonelcy of the 4th Dragoon Guards and rose to the rank of General. Aside from his military career he also sat as Member of Parliament for Lichfield from 1806 to 1841. He was also the Groom of the Bedchamber to Prince Albert from 1836 to September 1841. In 1846 he was appointed the lieutenant-governor of the Chelsea College and became governor in May 1849.

The Anson M. Bangs was a tugboat that operated on the Great Lakes in the early 1900s.

She was built by Harlan & Hollingsworth (Wilmington, DE) in 1897. In 1909 or '04 (there are conflicting reports), she began service on the Great Lakes under Captain George Freitas. In 1916 she began operating out of Boston, MA.

In 1920 the Bangs' name was changed to Eileen Morse. In 1926 she was renamed Titan.

The Titan, originally Anson M. Bangs, foundered off Galveston, TX, on July 27, 1943.

Anson is situated about midway of the western side of Somerset County. Madison bounds it on the east, Embden and New Portland on the north, Starks on the south, and Industry and New Vineyard, in Franklin County, on the West. The Kennebec river separates it from Madison, and the Carabasset River passing through the northeast corner of the town forms a junction with the Kenebec at North Anson village. Carabasset Falls and Rapids at this place afford several interesting views. The strong whirling currents near the bridge at the village have worn the slatey rocks into many peculiar forms, and the scene is very striking to the stranger. This village, being the northern terminus of the Somerset Railroad, is the centre of business for a wide extent of country, and is, therefore, very thriving. It is about 33 miles from Waterville and 100 from Portland by railroad. The manufactories of the town are clustered at this point. They consist of boots, shoes, leather, bricks, lumber, flour, wool rolls, etc. The are two saw mills, and three boot and shoe manufactories. The most extensive manufacturer is S. Bunker. The company doing the most business is Carrabasset Mills. On the Kennebec in the southern part of the town is Anson Village. it is opposite Madison Village on the eastern side of the river, and is connected there with by an excellent bridge.

The surface of the town is moderately level, but broken by high hills in the central and western part, known as Lane, Gamage and Collins hills. There is much rich alluvial soil in the town. Agriculture is the chief occupation of the inhabitants, and is profitably followed.

Settlements were made here at about the same time as at Norridgewock; adventurers pushing up the river in order to take possession of the rich alluvial lands on the banks of the Kennebec. When surveyed, Anson was found to be outside the limits of the Plymouth patent, and it was accordingly called Township Number 1, west of the Kennebec river, north of the Plymouth patent. It was incorporated in 1798 under its present name. In 1845 it was divided, and North Anson incorporated out of it; but a re-union of the parts took place in 1855.

North Anson has in the "Union Advocate" a valuable local and county paper. It is issued every Wednesday by Albert Moore & Son. Its politics are democratic. The Congregationalists, Free Baptists, Methodists and Universalists each have churches in Anson. The town has twenty-one public schoolhouses; the total school property being valued at $3,500. Anson Academy, located at North Anson Village, is a well-established and thriving institution. Many able and successful business and professional men have received here a large part of their education. The valuation of the town in 1870 was $554,407. In 1880, it was $585,080. The population in 1870 was 1,745. In 1880, it was 1,557.

John Anson Ford Amphitheatre

The Ford Theatres consist of two venues in Los Angeles: The Ford Amphitheatre and [Inside] the Ford. Their site describes the history of the Ford Amphitheatre:

The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre is one of the oldest performing arts venues in Los Angeles still in use. The open-air amphitheatre sits on a 45-acre park-like setting in the Cahuenga Pass. It is now the home of the Ford Amphitheatre Season, a multi-disciplinary performing arts series running May through October, coordinated by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

The amphitheatre was built in 1920 as the site of the Pilgrimage Play. The author, Christine Wetherill Stevenson, believed the rugged beauty of the Cahuenga Pass would provide a dramatic outdoor setting for the play. Together with Mrs. Chauncey D. Clark, she purchased this land along with that on which the Hollywood Bowl now sits. A wooden, outdoor amphitheatre was built on this site; the play was performed by noted actors every summer from 1920 to 1929, until the original structure was destroyed by a brush fire in October 1929.

The present theatre, constructed of poured concrete and designed in the style of ancient Judaic architecture to resemble the gates of Jerusalem, was built on the same site and opened in 1931. The Pilgrimage Play was again performed here until 1964, interrupted only by World War II, when the structure was converted to dormitories for servicemen. In 1941 the land was deeded to the County of Los Angeles. The Pilgrimage Play continued to be presented until a lawsuit in 1964 forced its closure because of its religious nature.

The County continued to use the amphitheatre for a variety of concerts and performances, but public attendance dwindled. The structure gradually deteriorated until the late County Supervisor John Anson Ford obtained funding for capital improvements several decades ago. The Pilgrimage Theatre was then renamed in his honor. It was used intermittently for Shakespearean theater, jazz concerts, and dance performances until former County Supervisor Ed Edelman revived the historic theatre with the creation of the Ford Amphitheatre Season (originally called "Summer Nights at the Ford") in 1993.

Between 1995 and 2000, $4.3 million in capital improvements were made to the stage, backstage, and public areas of the Ford complex, including a $1.6 million renovation of the entryway. One of the goals of these renovations was to make the facility completely ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. These capital investments by the County of Los Angeles continue to bring the historic site up to modern safety, access and performance standards for the enjoyment of all.

WRIGHT, Anson - Originally from a small town in western Pennsylvania, Anson Wright moved to New York City after graduating from Princeton University. In New York he composed and performed original music for acoustic guitar. Since moving to Oregon, Anson has turned his focus to jazz, and he has performed throughout the United States. He has worked with Nancy King, Glen Moore, Jay Collins, Ron Steen, and many others. In addition to his jazz playing, his acoustic guitar compositions and his poetry have been set to modern dance. He has taught at numerous schools including New York University, Pacific University, and Portland Community College. Anson is an endorsing artist for Hofner guitars.

Anson Wright is one of the small number of jazz artists who have received critical acclaim as writers as well as musicians. Author Anais Nin praised the writing in his novel, Jericho, calling it "bottom of the sea level." The National Endowment for the Arts provided the funding for his second book, Openings. Anson's first full-length poetry book, Sandstone Monastery, was released in December of 2004.

H.M.S. Anson

Yet another ship named after Lord Anson, this Anson

was built at Paull, near Hull in 1812. She was 175 feet in length.

HMS Anson was a 74 Gun Ship of the Line of 1,870 tons. She was refitted at Chatham Naval Dockyard for her one and only voyage to Tasmania. She carried 499 male convicts - including Winteringham’s John Button [apparently Winteringham produced many criminals] - to Hobart , Tasmania. This was the largest number of convicts ever carried by a single ship. She left Southampton on 1st October 1843, and landed at Hobart on 4th February 1844, under Captain Coglin. After the convicts were disembarked, she was refitted as a prison, and towed to Prince of Wales Bay, Risdon near Hobart where she was moored, and used as a prison for female convicts from 1844 onwards. This was to alleviate overcrowding at Cascades Female Factory.

Andrew Millar, the surgeon on the Anson's last voyage, recorded the experience.

Robert Anson Heinlein was born on July 7, 1907, in Butler, Mo. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1929, he served as an officer in the Navy for five years. He spent some time at the University of California at Los Angeles studying mathematics and physics. His first magazine story was published in 1939 and his first novel, Rocket Ship Galileo, in 1947. The novel was the basis for his screenplay for the motion picture Destination Moon (1950). His fiction often anticipated scientific and technical advances, such as the atomic bomb and the waterbed. His most popular book was Stranger in a Strange Land (1961), which became a hippie handbook and introduced the verb grok (to know intuitively, totally).

Heinlein's books include Beyond This Horizon (1948), Red Planet (1949), Sixth Column (1949), Puppet Masters (1951), Revolt in 2100 (1953), Starman Jones (1953), Tunnel in the Sky (1955), The Menace From Earth (1959), The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (1966), Number of the Beast (1980), Expanded Universe (1980), and Friday (1982). The Green Hills Of Earth (1951) is a short-story collection. He died in Carmel, Calif., on May 8, 1988.

The Lord Anson was a Lord Nelson class steam locomotive built in September, 1929 and decommissioned in October, 1962. The Lord Nelson engines were designed by Richard Maunsell, Chief Mechanical Engineer on the Southern Railway in the UK, and all 16 were named after famous admirals. The Lord Anson was named after George Anson, 1st Baron Anson, and was numbered British Railways (BR) 30861 and Southern Railways (SR) 861.

All of the Lord Nelson engines were taken out of service in 1961-62. The Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society has the only surviving one, the prototype Lord Nelson.

Several ships of the line were named after Lord Anson in the British navy. This HMS Anson was an Admiral class ironclad in the 1800s. On March 18, 1891, the British steamer Utopia was driven by high winds into the Anson's bow off the coast of Gibraltar. When the two ships separated the Utopia quickly sank, killing 562. The New York Times reported on the accident the next day.

One survivor's account described "a terrible mass of human beings fighting their way desperately and savagely, regardless of sex or age, toward the [rescue] boats. Men, women, and children tumbled and climbed over each other in the horrible fight for a chance to escape from drowning."

The Anson mounted 10 guns (two pairs of 67-ton guns and an auxiliary battery of six 6-in. guns), was 10,600 tons and 11,500 horsepower.

Not named Anson, not named after an Anson, this palatial estate was built by an Anson. As explained in an online catalog of American castles:

Merchant, banker, manufacturer, inventor, investor, and philanthropist Anson Phelps Stokes commissioned Shadow Brook castle in 1891. The architect was H. Neill Wilson, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. At a cost of one million dollars, four hundred men labored for two years to build it. At the time of its completion in 1893, it was America's largest house, and remained so for two years until Biltmore was completed in Asheville, N.C., in 1895. The foundation, first floor, and most of the stonework were made of locally quarried marble. The tower was made of marble entirely. The 728 acre estate included a working farm, and a mansion previously on the site was remodeled as a carriage barn.

Mr. Stokes lost a leg five years later in a riding accident, and lost also his liking of a house with over three acres of floorspace. After an attempt to make Shadow Brook castle into an inn failed, it passed through several hands, ending up under the ownership of the wealthiest man in the world at that time, Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie had been looking for a suitable summer home in the United States to compliment his Scottish castles and numerous other homes, and immediately proceeded to remodel Shadow Brook castle to the tune of over a million dollars. President Grover Cleveland was one of many notables that enjoyed the estate as guests of Mr. Carnegie. Andrew Carnegie died at Shadow Brook castle in 1919.

Andrew Carnegie's widow gave Shadow Brook to the Jesuit Society of Jesus in 1922. In March of 1956, the castle burned, but was rebuilt. The new building does not approach the quality of the old one.

A reader reminded me of another athlete named Anson, Anson Carter. Wikipedia says:

Anson Carter (born 6 June 1974) is a Canadian professional ice hockey right winger of Barbadian descent who last played for HC Lugano in the Swiss Nationalliga A. In the past, he has played for eight different National Hockey League teams, most notably with the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers. He is also the founder of Big Up Entertainment, a record label specializing in hip hop music.
